Installing an MT4 EA takes three steps: copy the .ex4 file into the MQL4/Experts subfolder of your MT4 data directory (File > Open Data Folder in MT4), restart MT4 or refresh the Navigator panel, and drag the EA onto a chart. Make sure Algo Trading is enabled (the icon in the toolbar shows green) and that “Allow live trading” is checked in the EA settings. Always test on a demo account before going live.
MT4 is being slowly deprecated by MetaQuotes in favour of MT5, but most brokers still support both platforms and most EA developers maintain MT4 versions of their products. If you are starting from scratch and your broker supports both, MT5 has technical advantages (better backtesting, support for stocks and indices, more order types). For pure Forex trading with existing EAs, MT4 remains the safe default.

Is MT4 still supported in 2026?

Can MT4 EAs run on MT5?
No. MT4 EAs are compiled .ex4 files written in MQL4. MT5 uses .ex5 files written in MQL5. Most EA developers maintain separate versions for each platform. If you switch platforms, you need the MT5-compatible build of your EA.
Do I need a VPS to run MT4 EAs?
For 24-hour trading EAs (scalpers, grid systems, news traders), a VPS is essential because MT4 needs to stay connected to the broker continuously. For lower-frequency EAs that trade a few times per day, a stable home connection can work, though execution timing will suffer compared to a VPS.
How many MT4 EAs can I run at once?
MT4 supports one EA per chart but you can open dozens of charts simultaneously. The practical limit is RAM and CPU: a VPS with 2GB RAM and 2 CPU cores comfortably runs 10 to 15 EA charts. Assign each EA a unique magic number to prevent order conflicts.
